They say every dog has his day, but three lucky canines will be honored all year after winning the annual AAA PetBook® Photo Contest, sponsored by Best Western. The prize-winning pups will enjoy a year of fame by gracing the back cover and spine of the 13th edition Traveling With Your Pet: The AAA PetBook®, available this May.
“For many families, pets are full-fledged family members, and this contest shows how easy and enjoyable travelling with four-legged friends can be,” said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona. “And while pets enjoy the sights and smells of a new city, there’s also an added perk for pet owners, as the cost of taking a pet on vacation is often more economical than boarding your pet over the duration of your trip.”
Twink, a golden retriever from Chattanooga, Tenn., and first-place winner, will be pictured on the PetBook’s back cover showing a spectacular view of the rapids at the Ocoee River in Tennessee. The second-place winners, a pair of Samoyeds named Siri and Ella from Blackstone, Mass., will be shown on the book’s spine, featuring their trek through Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.
The contest also named 43 runners up, three of which are from Arizona – a golden retriever named Quincey and an Australian cattle dog named Rusty, both from Scottsdale, and a pug from Peoria named Augie. All of these four-legged finalists will be featured in a special 16-page section of the PetBook and the AAA PetBook Photo Contest gallery.
Pets are increasingly becoming popular travel companions, and according to the Travel Industry Association of America, more than 29 million Americans have traveled with a pet in the past three years, often during peak family summer vacation months. With more businesses opening their doors to the pet population, owners who cannot resist those puppy dog eyes are finding it easier to bring Fido along for the trip.
“Quincey is a huge part of our family, so it wouldn’t be a true family vacation without him,” said Kristen Shroyer, the golden retriever’s owner. “There are so many pet friendly hotels and restaurants these days, and so many fun activities to do with your pooch.”
Travelers interested in taking their furry friends on holiday can find more than 13,000 pet-friendly AAA Approved lodgings in the U.S. and Canada in Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA PetBook®. The detailed lodging listings include fees, permitted pet sizes, and conditions of stay for properties at every Diamond Rating level. The book also includes information about pet-friendly activities, planning tips, travel safety, and more than 400 AAA Rated pet-friendly campgrounds.
