Phoenix, Ariz. June 21, 2010. During the summer months, many Arizonans head to the high country to escape the heat. However, those plans can quickly be derailed by wildfires.
Currently, blazes in northern Arizona, including the Schultz and Eagle Rock fires, have grown to nearly 9,000 acres, forcing evacuations and closing roadways, including US 89.
As a result, AAA would like to offer the following tips to northern Ariz. bound travelers:
- Stay informed. Wildfires can change quickly. If you have plans to visit the area, check the US Forest Service website or nearby municipality’s website, such as the City of Flagstaff for updates before leaving home.
- Avoid evacuated areas. If you have travel plans to an area that has been evacuated, do not travel to the area until it is safe to do so.
- Know before you go. Before leaving home, call 511 or visit az511.gov, an Arizona Department of Transportation resource that provides information on highway conditions, related programs and services.
- Consult your travel pro. One of the benefits of booking through a travel agent is the assistance a professional can offer should an unforeseen circumstance affect your travel plans. If you booked travel to northern Ariz. through an agent, contact them directly to advise on your specific travel plans.
