AAA Stresses Importance of Flood Insurance

Phoenix, Ariz., July 21, 2010. The recent flooding in Flagstaff has underscored the importance of flood insurance in high risk areas. As a result, AAA Arizona would like to offer the following tips regarding flood insurance:

  • Homeowner’s isn’t enough. Contrary to what many homeowners believe, “flooding” is NOT covered under a homeowner’s insurance policy.
However, if two or more homes in the area are affected by “rising water” damage, the damage could be covered by National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) – an additional policy homeowners can purchase.

  • Anywhere it rains, it can flood. Flood insurance is available to homeowners, renters, condo owners/renters, and commercial owners/renters. Costs vary depending on how much insurance is purchased, what it covers, and the property's flood risk. You do not have to live in a flood zone to have a flood insurance policy. However, there are high and lower risk areas.
  •  Know what’s covered. It is important for consumers to know what their current policy is so they know what’s covered and what’s not Storm damage that is covered under a homeowner’s insurance policy includes:
      • Surface water
      • Roof
      • Fire/lightning
      • Hail
